Mapping of product functions and design principles for additive manufacturing


Summary:

Additive manufacturing enables the production of products with greater geometric, hierarchical, and functional complexity, and with it new possibilities in product design. Research conducted hitherto showed that methods and tools in the area of design for additive manufacturing developed hitherto are focused on redesign and optimization of existing products and not on the development of new products. Therefore, the need for the development of methods and tools that would enable utilization of all manufacturing possibilities offered by additive technologies during design and development of new product emerged. The proposed research is thus focused on early phases of the design process with the goal of using methods and tools for mapping of individual or a sequence of product functions with design principles for additive manufacturing to overcome the disadvantages of existing methods and tools, and improve design solutions.
