The paper describes additive metal production with an emphasis on DMLS (Direct metal laser sintering) production process. The principles for additive metal production, which help designers in the early stages of product development, have been established and described. The principles of additive metal production are different from traditional production methods. The described methodology consists of collecting products for analyzing made by DMLS production process, making functional structures of products, analyzing products and functional structures, mapping features with functions, identifying design principles, design guidelines and parameters for production and making CAD models and physical models. By analyzing existing products, 15 principles are identified based on the capabilities and characteristics of DMLS production process. CAD models with individual principles were also developed. Finally, the individual principles were grouped and presented on five CAD models that were later developed by the DMLS production process. The presented construction principles encourage creativity, suggest a solution to a given problem or encourage the development of a new idea at an early stage of product development by additive metal production.
